A Nespresso machine is a popular appliance in many households for quickly and easily making a nice cup of coffee. Just like other coffee makers, a Nespresso machine can build up limescale over time, especially in areas with harder water. Limescale can significantly reduce the performance of your machine and thus shorten the lifespan of your appliance. Coffee starts to flow much more slowly, pipes and tubes slowly become clogged, the pump has to work harder. Fortunately, descaling is very easy and there is no need to buy expensive branded descaling agents. Here is how you can easily descale your Nespresso machine:
Why You Should Descale Your Nespresso

Benefits of Regular Descaling
- Improved Taste : Limescale can affect the taste of your coffee by changing minerals in the water. Regular descaling ensures that your coffee always tastes optimal.
- Longer Lifespan : Limescale can damage the internal components of your Nespresso machine, which can lead to expensive repairs or replacement. Regular descaling can extend the lifespan of your machine.
- Efficiency : A descaled machine heats water faster and more efficiently, resulting in a shorter preparation time.
- Preventing blockages : Limescale can cause blockages that are almost impossible to unblock, because the pipes and hoses are all very thin and impossible to integrate into your appliance. Descaling helps prevent this and ensures smoother operation.
How Often Should You Descale Your Nespresso?
How often you descale depends on the hardness of the water in your area and how often you use your machine. Nespresso recommends descaling your machine approximately every three months, or after 300 cups of coffee. In areas with very hard water, you may need to descale more often, according to Coffee Affection . You can also do it by feel, descaling when your machine starts to work noticeably less.
Steps to Descale your Nespresso
Supplies
- Nespresso descaling kit (or a universal descaling agent for coffee machines), or regular kitchen vinegar (not cleaning vinegar).
- Water
- A container or pan of at least 1 liter
Step-by-step Instructions
-
Preparing the Machine :
- Turn on the machine and make sure there is no capsule in the machine.
- Fill the water tank with 500 ml of water and add the contents of the Nespresso descaling solution "according to the official Nespresso manual ". Or fill a third to a half of the tank with vinegar ( not cleaning vinegar , which is two to three times stronger than table vinegar and may contain methanol) and top up with water. This often works just as well and is a lot cheaper.

-
Starting the Descaling Cycle :
- Place your container or pan under the coffee outlet to collect the descaling mixture.
- Start the descaling cycle by pressing and holding both brewing buttons simultaneously on the Nespresso Magimix, Inissia, Pixie and Citiz, when it is up to temperature.
Nespresso Vertuo : First you start the cleaning cycle, before you start the descaling cycle. Press the coffee button three times within two seconds to start the cleaning cycle (when the machine is at temperature), cycle lasts about 20 minutes. To start the descaling cycle, press the coffee button for 7 seconds until it starts flashing, close the machine and press the button to start the cycle. (The video from Nespresso itself is really very vague and confusing)
-
Performing the Descaling Cycle :
- Run the descaling solution through the machine. This process usually only takes a few minutes.
- Repeat the cycle if necessary with, depending on the stubbornness of the limescale. You can reuse the used solution for a second or even third rinse.

-
Rinsing the Machine :
- After the descaling cycle, rinse the water tank to remove any descaling agent residue.
- Refill the water reservoir with clean water.
- Start a rinse cycle by running water through the machine again to remove all descaling agent residue.
Tips for Preventive Maintenance
- Use Filtered Water : This can reduce limescale build-up and reduce the need for frequent descaling.
- Regular Descaling : Maintain a schedule of descaling your machine every three months, depending on usage.
- Clean the Machine : Regularly clean the machine parts, such as the water tank and capsule holder, to prevent the build-up of dirt and limescale.
- Use a Water Softener : Installing a water softener can reduce the hardness of your water, which can significantly reduce limescale build-up in your Nespresso machine and other household appliances.
Regularly descaling your Nespresso machine is essential to maintain the taste of your coffee and the lifespan of your appliance. By descaling, you ensure that your machine always performs optimally and you continue to enjoy the best quality coffee possible.
