How to Descale Your Shower Head for a Sparkling Shower Experience!

This could be due to a build-up of limescale in the holes of your shower head, especially if you live in an area with harder water. But don’t worry, cleaning and descaling your shower head is easier than you think. With the following simple steps, you can get your shower head sparkling again and enjoy optimal water flow.
Why Cleaning Your Shower Head is Important

Limescale can clog the holes in your shower head over time, restricting water flow and reducing water pressure. A dirty shower head can also become a breeding ground for bacteria and mold, which is not exactly conducive to a hygienic shower experience. Regular cleaning and descaling is therefore essential to prevent these problems and ensure a fresh and effective shower.
How to Clean Your Shower Head with Vinegar
Before you buy expensive descaling products, it’s best to use white vinegar first, a common natural cleaning agent that’s effective against limescale. Follow these simple steps to clean and descale your shower head:
Supplies:
- White vinegar (other vinegars will work too)
- A bucket or plastic container
- An old toothbrush
- A soft cloth

1. Remove the shower head: Carefully unscrew the shower head from the hose. Be careful not to lose the rubber ring, as this prevents water from leaking at the connection.

2. Soak the shower head in vinegar: Fill a bucket or basin with vinegar and submerge the shower head. Make sure the shower head is completely submerged in the vinegar (and water) solution. You can do half water and half vinegar, but then you will just descale the shower head a bit longer.
3. Let it soak: Let the shower head soak in the vinegar for at least 30 minutes to an hour. For brass shower heads, it is recommended to soak for no longer than 30 minutes. With diluted vinegar with water, take a few hours or better yet, overnight (I prefer to do this myself, for optimal results).
4. Scrub: Use an old toothbrush to remove any remaining limescale, especially around the shower head openings. Sometimes the soft rubber holes get a bit stuck. Get moving.
5. Rinse and dry: Rinse the shower head to remove all vinegar and limescale. Then dry the shower head with a soft cloth for a spot-free result.
6. Replace the shower head: Screw the shower head back onto the hose, making sure it is secure. Test for leaks, and you’re done!
Now that your shower head is clean and descaled, you can enjoy a refreshing shower experience without any obstacles! Repeat these steps about once a month to prevent limescale build-up and keep your shower head in optimal condition.

Products that you should not use to descale the shower head:
Baking soda : While baking soda is handy for many household tasks, it is not particularly effective for descaling your shower head. The limescale on your shower head is usually too stubborn to easily remove with baking soda.
Coke : Although coke is acidic and can theoretically dissolve limescale, it is also very sweet, which can lead to sticky residue. It is also more expensive than cleaning vinegar and leaves a lot of mess.
Abrasives : Abrasives can damage the shower head because the fine abrasive particles can scratch the chrome surface. In addition, these particles can get into the spray holes during cleaning, which can hinder the operation of the shower head.
Bleach : Bleach is harmful to groundwater and can cause an unpleasant odor in the bathroom. Although bleach can lighten limescale, it is not very effective at actually removing it.

Which Vinegar for Descaling?
The best vinegar is the one you already have on hand. When choosing vinegar for descaling, white vinegar is the best option due to its acidity and affordability. This common kitchen vinegar is effective at removing limescale and doesn’t leave a residue like balsamic vinegar. Make sure you use enough vinegar (and optionally water) to completely cover the shower head while soaking.

White Vinegar : This is the most common choice because of its acidity and affordability. It is very effective at removing limescale without leaving a residue.
Apple cider vinegar : Slightly less powerful than white vinegar, but still effective on light limescale. Also has antibacterial properties.
Balsamic Vinegar : Can be used to clean surfaces and remove light limescale, but less powerful and may leave a residue.
Rice Vinegar : Has a mild acidity and can help remove light limescale, but may take longer to take effect.
